About the Millburn-Short Hills, New Jersey Area 

MILLBURN, N.J., is a township with a split personality. Its northern section, known as Short Hills, gives its name to an upscale shopping center, the Mall at Short Hills. The residential area of Short Hills is characterized by winding, hilly roads, bordered by thick stands of oaks. Behind them, often shielded from public view by sumptuous flower gardens, are some of the country's best examples of 19th-century residential architecture. The rest of the town, known as the Millburn section, is laid out more conventionally, with neat streets and a mixture of building styles -- small turn-of-the-century workers' houses, Victorians, Tudors, Cape Cods and 1950's ranches and colonials -- on smaller lots, some just 36 feet wide.

New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked Millburn as the 53rd best place to live in New Jersey in its 2008 rankings of the "Best Places To Live" in New Jersey.

Downtown Millburn

Downtown Millburn is a welcoming, charming, and sophisticated town with a distinctive blend of shops, boutiques, and fine restaurants. Millburn is also the home of the Paper Mill Playhouse, a nationally recognized theater and playhouse that dates back to 1938.

The Mall at Short Hills

The Mall at Short Hills, located in the northwest corner of the Township, is an unusually beautiful regional shopping center housing more than 170 fine shops, restaurants and department stores including branches of Bloomingdale's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Macy's. More than 1000 businesses and professionals are located in the Township. 

Transportation

Buses and trains provide easy access to New York City--both mid-town and lower Manhattan--as well as to businesses in Hoboken, Newark and Jersey City. Commuter parking lots are available for residents. Trains stop in both Millburn and Short Hills, and buses pick up commuters at various points in town. In addition, Millburn-Short Hills is a quick 15 to 20 minutes from Newark Airport and is close to major highways.

Education

The Millburn Township Public Schools serve students in prekindergarten through twelfth grade. Schools in the district are five K-5 elementary schools — Deerfield Elementary School, Glenwood Elementary School, Hartshorn Elementary School, South Mountain Elementary School and Wyoming Elementary School — Millburn Middle School for sixth through eighth grade and Millburn High School for grades 9-12.

During the 2007-08 school year, Millburn High School was recognized with the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence, the highest award an American school can receive. It was also named as one of the Top 100 High Schools in U.S. News and World Report's first ever ranking of U.S. high schools. It was also ranked as Number 148 in Newsweek Magazine's listing of "America's Best High Schools" in the August 5, 2005 issue.

New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked Millburn High School as the best high school in New Jersey in its 2008 rankings of the "Top Public High Schools" in New Jersey.

Entertainment

Paper Mill Playhouse is a regional theatre that was officially designated as the "State Theatre of New Jersey". Due to its location (it can draw from the pool of actors who live in New York City) as well as its focus on producing large-scale shows, it essentially makes Paper Mill a Broadway theatre thirty minutes from Broadway. Paper Mill also has New Jersey Ballet as its resident ballet company with the annual production of Nutcracker since 1971.

Outdoor Life

The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary, located on Forest Drive in Short Hills, was created from undeveloped woodlands by its former owners, the Hartshorns. Within its 16 acres are hundreds of varieties of birds, wild flowers and trees. The Arboretum sponsors classes, lectures, workshops and field trips in nature study and crafts.

Gero Park, 36-acres on White Oak Ridge Road, has a nine-hole par-three golf course, the town's sole public pool, four tennis courts and two baseball diamonds.

Canoe Brook, private 18-hole golf course, is the largest recreational area in the 2,000-acre South Mountain Reservation recreation area, owned by Essex County.

Taylor Park, 13 acres on Millburn Avenue, has a central fountain and a number of ponds and footbridges, all ringed by a walking trail.
