Livingston is a wonderful town that, despite being a large-sized NYC suburb, often has a small-town feel. We like the excellent schools, the great library system, and all the town programming.
When we bought the property we were drawn to that it was closest to the three things that were most important to us (1) it was a short trip to I-280 (as opposed to first driving 10 minutes through town to get to the highway), (2) it was close to the Livingston town pool, (3) it was walking distance to several houses of worship. We were also drawn to Northland Park, which is right across the street. It has a town pool, tennis courts, baseball fields, a playground, a basketball court, and a soccer field. We could let the kids walk over there from the house.
The Livingston area is good for its central location for commuting to nearly all of northern New Jersey as well as midtown and downtown Manhattan. A few other things I can also mention are the proximity to shopping, including nearly every major chain store on Route 10 as well as The Short Hills Mall and Livingston Mall. The Livingston area offers many wonderful opportunities to get involved around town, including sports, children’s theater, and a recreational symphony orchestra.
Everyone walks around the Livingston Oval at nearly all hours of the day and times of the year. Also, we are not far from the newly built track around the South Mountain reservoir. Our favorite place to go sledding is at Hillside School, where it is a great communal experience. We love to watch the 4th of July fireworks at the Hillside School… it is less crowded, less noisy and we always see friends there.
People here are surprisingly nice considering it is a rather large suburb.
Some of our hobbies include comic books. There is a great comic book / manga shop in town.
Our neighborhood is great for walking to (1) synagogue, (2) the houses of friends from the synagogue, (3) Starbucks, (4) the Town Center, and (5) Northland Park.
Our utility costs are:
Water/Sewer approximately $225 per quarter.
Electric: $150 per month winter, $250 per month summer
Gas: $20 per month summer, $100 per month winter
